What Is Tendonitis?
Tendons are cord-like structures that attach muscle to bone and move the limb when a muscle is contracted. When a tendon is stretched, pulled or torn, tendonitis can occur. The following are the most common forms of tendonitis:
Tendonitis of the knee, or jumper’s knee, is one of the most common forms of tendonitis. The condition affects the patellar tendon, located and the lower edge of the kneecap, and the quadriceps tendon, located at the upper edge of the kneecap. Long distance runners and basketball players are usually affected by jumper’s knee.
de Quervain’s Disease
Tendonitis of the wrist, or de Quervain’s disease, is painful swelling of the tendons in the thumb and wrist. This condition usually results in pain that extends through the forearm. Thumb motions used to pinch or grasp objects may become difficult and painful.
The Achilles tendon is a ropelike structure that connects the calf muscle to the heel. Achilles tendonitis can result from overuse, a sudden increase in activity level, improperly fitted shoes, and strained calf muscles. Achilles tendonitis can cause pain and swelling along the Achilles tendon and into the foot.
How Is Tendonitis Treated?

Cochrane Summaries, an international, not-for-profit organization that studies clinical trials in health care, conducted a study on the effectiveness of acupuncture for tennis elbow. The report concluded that acupuncture may be able to provide short term relief for tendonitis pain. When used to treat tendonitis, acupuncture improves circulation and blood flow by treating the areas near the source of pain.
When a tendon is overused or injured its strength is compromised. In addition to pain, swelling and inflammation can also occur. Massage therapy can relieve pain and swelling, and restore strength by manipulating the tissue surrounding the affected area in order to increase blood flow, reduce tension, and improve mobility.
Why Does Tendonitis Occur?

- Repetitive motions

What Can You Do To Prevent Tendonitis?
The following suggestions may reduce the risk of developing a tendon injury: Warm up before activity. If you want to increase your activity level, do so gradually. Wear proper fitting and supportive shoes, especially when playing sports or exercising. Focus more on quality than quantity while active. Concentrate on proper technique, not how long you can go or how many you can do. Stretch after activity.
